This seminar will present a contemporary psychoanalytic perspective for working with gay men in psychotherapy. The essentialist perspective on gender identity and sexual orientation inherent in traditional psychoanalytic theory will be critiqued. Recent psychoanalytic contributions addressing gay male experiences will also be reviewed, with an emphasis on highlighting important developmental milestones. The implications of psychoanalytic theory for gay patients will be examined in the literature and through clinical illustrations from the instructor and students.
