Freud spoke of listening with “evenly hovering attention.” Bion focused on listening “without memory or desire.” Ogden highlights the significance of reverie. Buddhists teach mindfulness.
Listening psychoanalytically is an elusive state of mind, the development of which sometimes gets neglected as attention is focused on how to interpret what it is we hear on the latent or symbolic level, specifically informed by our theoretical preference.
In this seminar we will begin by engaging with poetry, music and meditation in ways that might broaden and deepen our capacity to listen psychoanalytically to our patients. In the last two meetings we will listen to a case presentation, keeping in mind what we have learned and how that might allow us greater access to what it is that is missing in a patient’s experience of him or herself. This seminar offers the opportunity for participants to share clinical material from their cases, however, it is not a requirement.
