The Robert S. Wallerstein Fellowship in Psychoanalytic Reserach

Information for Applicants

The Wallerstein Fellowship in Psychoanalytic Research is awarded to a person actively involved in the conduct of empirical research in psychoanalysis. The Fellow is selected by the Wallerstein Fellowship Committee at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis.  He or she is awarded a Grant of not less than $20,000; larger annual grants are dependent upon the earnings of the fund supporting the Fellowship.  The Grant shall be used to pay direct costs for salary and research.  The Grant may not be used for administrative costs, except for those administrative costs associated with salary and research costs, not to exceed ten percent of the amount of the Grant.

The Committee will consider any proposal for investigative psychoanalytic research, broadly defined.  The next appointment to the Fellowship will be made on or before March 1, 2017 for the academic year 2017-2018.  The deadline for submission for applications for this appointment is September 1, 2016.  The Fellow will hold the position for a minimum of five years, subject to annual review by the Wallerstein Fellowship Committee and its determination that the funds are being used appropriately and that all required reporting is being provided.

The applicant must be a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association or be actively sponsored by a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association.  According to the terms of the Fellowship, priority will be given to members of the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis; interested applicants who are not currently members might apply for Community Membership by contacting the Membership Committee at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis.

The Fellow is required to provide a written report of budget allocations annually; continued funding is contingent upon these financial reports.  In addition, the Fellow is required to provide written reports of his or her research activity to the Board of Trustees and oral reports to the Wallerstein Fellowship Committee at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis on an annual basis.  When feasible, the Fellow will present his or her work in an appropriate venue at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis at some point during the term of the Fellowship.  Finally, the Fellow will attempt to publish his findings in appropriate journals or books; the Fellow agrees that when work supported by the Fellowship Grant is published or presented publically that he or she will acknowledge the Fellowship award.
