2017 - 2018 Child Development Program
Reflective Parenting Incubator Project (RPIP)
Parenting Groups for Parents of Children Zero to Eighteen
Facilitator: Era A. Loewenstein, PhD
The Reflective Parenting Incubator Project (RPIP), which won twice, in the past two years, grants from the American Psychoanalytic Foundation, has a few openings in the “Incubator” for the 2017 – 2018 academic year. The study group, now in its ninth year, functions as an “Incubator” supporting the development, design, implementation and evaluation of psychoanalytically informed workshops and reflective groups for parents of children zero to eighteen years old.
The parenting groups we lead are aimed at facilitating the growth of parents’ reflective function. By reflective function we refer to a universal capacity to observe mental states in oneself and in others, that is, to imagine the existence of unobservable needs, desires, feelings, beliefs, states of mind and intentions that motivate the manifest behavior of children.
During the coming year we will continue to read and discuss contemporary articles exploring the development of reflective function. We will also focus on further developing our Transitions Workshops, which help parents and children negotiate the at times tumultuous transition into a new school. We will also continue to develop two four-week didactic and experientially based parents’ groups. One group focuses on how parents can transform everyday challenging situations and the BIG feelings that are triggered by them into “just the right size feelings.” The second workshop focuses on how to discipline children and set positive and containing limits when needed, while engaging the child’s strength, cooperation, and problem solving skills.
Participants will also be invited to identify and develop other topics that they are particularly interested in for parents’ talks and workshops in various venues that offer opportunities to develop parenting groups.
The Incubator is offered to child psychotherapists and psychoanalysts, and to psychotherapists who currently work with parents, or to clinicians who would like to learn more about working with parents and/or would like to expend their understanding of child and adolescent development, attachment and trans-generational transmission of trauma.
We are looking for clinicians who are self-motivated and would be able over time to initiate new parenting groups privately, at agencies, or at private and public schools.
We meet on the third Thursday of each month, 7:30-9:00 pm at SFCP (10 meetings, September 21, 2017 through June 21, 2018). A commitment for a year is required.
