"You're a hard act to follow."
by Michael Donner, PhD
I have been puzzled by this comment, but because I heard it so frequently, I have also been giving it a lot of thought. It is an interesting contrast, and perhaps an adjunct to something I was told at the outset of my tenure: “beware of the projections of others.” I have been thinking about what these two comments have in common, and would like to share some of my thoughts about them here. Initially, I thought the comment about the projections of others reflected the possibility that people would see me as dangerous, a threat to the established order. I had some “new” ideas about how to keep the Center moving forward, and was aware that this might seem disruptive and problematic to some.
