Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Graduation

2014 PAPPTP Graduates

MARY-STONE BOWERS, MA, LMFT
The privilege and pleasure of participating in PAPPTP and continuing case conferences with SFCP has been priceless. This experience has provided constant encouragement and support to find my self and my patients over and over again. Learning from many analysts and sharing and connecting with several colleagues has been a wonderful, enriching experience and one I hope to continue. My analyst, consultants, supervisors and mentors have been kind and warm and shared with me the myriad of ways to think about what is in front of and within me. I thank the staff at PAPPTP and SFCP that have scheduled, taught, listened and offered their homes (and wine!), opening the door to me and others to meet the SFCP family, consider new possibilities and celebrate the accomplishments of many. I have had tremendous support and love from my husband, Craig and our three college children/adults (Brett, Alexandra, Sheridan) for which I am eternally grateful.

LAWRENCE CHOY, MD
PAPPTP has been a tremendous joy and invaluable training experience for me. I went into private practice right after completing my psychiatry residency. At that point, I considered myself to be a psychiatrist who also does therapy. Now, I think of myself more as a psychotherapist who also prescribes meds. I’ve grown as a clinician and am able to develop intimate therapeutic relationships with my patients that were likely not possible before. I am grateful to my PAPPTP class and teachers. I want to thank Neil Brast for introducing me to PAPPTP, and especially thank my supervisors, Dena Sorbo and Mark Snyder, for their patience, wisdom, and mentorship

2014 PPTP Graduates

ALEXIS ARMENAKIS, MD
Thank you to the dedicated SFCP faculty and to my wonderful group members for making PPTP a rewarding experience. I started this program when I was in my last year of psychiatry residency at UCSF and have continued the second year of PPTP during my geriatric psychiatry fellowship, which I will be completing in July. The quality of faculty consultants and the camaraderie of my group have been highlights and I look forward to continuing into the 3rd year Integrations course with my class. I imagine my involvement with psychodynamic therapy and the psychoanalytic community growing over the course of my career. Thanks for the welcoming introduction!

JOHN O’NEAL, MD
I have had a private practice in psychiatry in Sacramento for many years, doing a mixture of medication management and psy-chotherapy. I have a solo practice but have worked in a building with the offices of other therapists. Over the past ten years I have been involved with case conferences where I learned about newer psychoanalytic theories which piqued my interest. They seemed to be very helpful in understanding my patients, especially the personality disorders. I did some reading but did not really have a comprehensive theoretical framework so I applied to PPTP. I have found it very helpful in both giving me more of the theory, but also the case conference and supervision has been helpful in applying the theory. I have enjoyed the friendships formed with classmates and now find that not only am I enjoying my work more, I am able to be more helpful to my patients.

AMY TORCHIA, PsyD
The last three years of my road to licensure as a psychologist and beginning my practice have been full of challenges. I am certain that my PPTP experience has made this time more fun, engaging, and maturity-making than it would have been without it. Saying goodbye to PPTP comes with sadness; I will miss my friends, instructors, and supervisors and the time we shared thinking together. On the bright side, I say goodbye having gained a capacity for deeper work, a smart and alive community, an enhanced confidence in my practice, and a more profound curiosity that my patients and I can enjoy for years to come. This fall I will say hello to a new group as I join the psychoanalytic psychotherapy training program child and adolescent track. Thank you to my PPTP instructors, supervisors and classmates. It has been an unforgettable three years for me.
