Candidates’ Association
Upon acceptance for training, all candidates are eligible for membership in the Candidates’ Association.
Special meetings are held throughout the year that focus on issues of interest to the candidates or clinical presentations to visiting speakers and faculty.
In addition, the Candidates’ Organization serves as a link with candidates from other institutes and with the Candidates’ Associations of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
One of the main functions of the Candidates’ Association is to provide an organized channel for feedback from the candidate group to the faculty as well as from the faculty to the candidates.
Candidates’ Colloquia
During the year, senior analysts are invited to meet with candidates to discuss on-going analytic cases.
6-8 colloquia will be scheduled throughout the year; topics and times to be announced.

Child Colloquia
Three to six special events are arranged yearly with local and visiting child analysts to present clinical and theoretical material related to child analysts.
These colloquia are open to all candidates, post graduates and others in the mental health community.
These are usually on Saturday mornings.
"ADHD: Where's the Focus? A Treatment of a Boy with Psychoanalysis and Medication"
Presenter: Janis Baeuerlen, M.D.
Discussant: Robert Oelsner, M.D.

Time: 10:00am - 12:00noon
Location: SFCP, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Fl., San Francisco (entrance on Webster)
Dr. Baeuerlen will address the familiar and difficult dilemma of
child treatment when the presenting problems appear to be
neurobiological in origin. How do we help these children and
their families? Dr. Baeuerlen will present detailed analytic notes
on her work with an eight-year-old boy who was treated with
psychoanalysis and medication. Dr. Oelsner will expand his
understandings of the psychodynamics of this youngster.
"Beyond Trauma: [Almost] Everything You Need to Know About Theory and Intervention"

Date: Saturday, November 7, 2009
Time: 10:00am - 12:00noon
Location: SFCP, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Fl., San Francisco (entrance on Webster)
We have gathered together three well known psychoanalysts,
each with expertise in responding to trauma. They will tackle
hard questions: What do we need to know to respond to a
traumatic event, be it individual, institutional or environmental?
When and how do we react to the death of a preschool child,
the murder of a parent or to a frightening/catastrophic event
with community repercussions? What are the psychodynamic
strengths therapists need to stabilize themselves? What do we
offer to counter psychic disorientation which is timely, developmentally
appropriate and psychotherapeutic?
"Mum's the Word: Are We Becoming Silent on Masturbation?"
Presenter: Denia Barrett, L.I.S.W.
Date: Saturday, February 6, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 12:00noon
Location: SFCP, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Fl., San Francisco (entrance on Webster)
Is the role of the body, sexuality and masturbation addressed in
contemporary child analytic technique? Ms. Barrett explores
some of the factors influencing the dearth of masturbatory material
in case reports as well as the resistances analysts may experience
talking to child patients about their practices. Her focus is
on techniques that respect defenses while promoting an open
discussion of sexuality and related fantasies.
"Unable to Break Away: The Examination of an Interrupted Treatment"
Presenter: Ruth Karush, M.D.
Date: Saturday, March 6, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 12:00noon
Location: SFCP, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Fl., San Francisco (entrance on Webster)
Dr. Karush will discuss the two year analytic treatment of a 14
year old boy who struggled to separate from a primary love object
who unconsciously needed him to remain dependent. The
case raises many interesting questions including whether analysis
should have been recommended in the first place.
Dr. Karush will present: “Unfinished Business: When Adults
Return to their Childhood Analyst,” at the Scientific Meeting on
March 8, 2010. She will shed light on what may have been omitted
from analytic scrutiny during analyses of children that resulted
in the patients’ need to return for further work with their
childhood analyst.
"Film, Fantasy and Freud: An Afternoon at the Movies 'Forbidden Games'"
Presenter: Mark Scott, Ph.D.
Date: Sunday, March 21, 2009
Time: 1:00pm
Location: SFCP, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Fl., San Francisco (entrance on Webster)
Join us for a showing and discussion of this Oscar Winning Film
(1952) for Best Foreign Language Film by René Clément. This
brilliant and devastating drama of the tragic frailties of men and
the irony of war captures the authentic feel of childhood play and
the thinking processes of children.
(Note: this is a film for adults only)
"Trauma in the Transference: 'Therapist Abuse' by a Sexually Abused Boy"
Presenter: Charles Parks, Ph.D.
Date: Saturday, April 10, 2010
Time: 10:00am - 12:00noon
Location: SFCP, 2340 Jackson St., 4th Fl., San Francisco (entrance on Webster)
Dr. Parks will present his remarkable account of the difficult
analytic work with an eight-year-old boy who was sexually
abused at a very young age. Forced to endure hours of maltreatment
at the hands of this boy, Parks was able to use his understanding
of the transference and countertransference relationship
to reach this disturbed boy.
