Antonino Ferro, M.D. has enriched psychoanalysis through his insightful elaboration of the concept of the field and the work of Wilfred Bion. He has both a unique understanding and a dynamic relationship with many of Bion’s concepts such as alpha function and negative capability. The analyst’s capacity for reverie, receptivity to projective identifications and waking dream thought are central ideas in his work. He has developed these ideas into a way of working clinically with patients with the aim of enlarging their capacity to think and to process emotional experiences.
Dr. Ferro has also achieved a sophisticated interweaving of Bionian thought and field theory. He has taken the work of the Barrangers and others on the bi-personal field and created an approach that deepens our understanding of the analytic encounter. The field is activated by both patient and analyst. This field is the medium through which analytic work and emotional transformation occur. Dr. Ferro also has made use of the idea of the narrative, and narrative transformations in his clinical work. He thinks in terms of characters that enter the session as reflections of the field, as well as of internal life.
In The Analyst’s Consulting Room, Dr. Ferro writes: “the analyst’s main concern must be with the material of which he has direct evidence, namely, the emotional experience of the analytic sessions themselves.” In his writing, his clinical approach is generously illustrated through vignettes allowing the reader into Dr. Ferro’s complex and nuanced view of the analyst-patient encounter. Going beyond the idea of “decoding” the patient’s unconscious fantasies, Ferro seeks to both understand and create with the patient an understanding of the emotional moment. He values “unsaturated interpretations…which bear witness to the analyst’s capacity both to endure doubt and uncertainty and to tolerate the existence of worlds in which unforeseeable vistas open up.” He thus listens carefully to the responses to his interpretations for how they reflect the patient’s ability to tolerate and make use of his words. He also thinks of the patient’s response as providing a window into the patient’s view of the functioning and receptivity of the analyst.
Antonino Ferro has written numerous articles and several books including, Psychoanalysis as Therapy and Storytelling, Seeds of Illness, Seeds of Recovery and In The Analyst’s Consulting Room. Dr. Ferro is a member of the Italian Psychoanalytical Institute and the International Psychoanalytical Association. He treats both adults and children in psychoanalysis.
We will begin the day with the presentation of Dr. Ferro’s paper, “Countertransference and the Characters of the Psychoanalytic Session.” In this paper, Dr. Ferro elaborates the concept of the field and its “characters” and describes how he makes use of Bion’s idea of alpha function. He explores levels of countertransference in the analyst, and illustrates with characters from literature and clinical vignettes. The paper will be discussed by Dr. Jim Dimon, who has taught extensively on transference and countertransference. Dr. Katherine MacVicar will present the case of an adult in psychoanalysis.
