The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a 2006 documentary directed by Jeff Feuerzeig. Its focus is the life and music of singer, songwriter and Austin personality Daniel Johnston. The film won the Documentary Directing Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. It is available on DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, which includes a supplemental feature documenting the reunion between Johnston and his long-time obsession, Laurie.

"The Devil and Daniel Johnston" artfully melds current footage, vintage performances, home movies, and dozens of recorded audiotapes from Daniel's life. Testimony from supportive friends and a deeply committed family add a rich layer to his personal history, but it is Daniel's poetic songs interwoven throughout the film, that tell their own passionate, haunting, and truly unforgettable story.

Now in his mid 40s, Daniel Johnston has grown into a prolific visual artist. His expressions have earned him worldwide recognition and critical praise, producing international exhibits where he continues to sell his vibrant and intimate sketches. He has recorded over ten full length albums, and his supporters have included Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain, who was often seen wearing a Daniel Johnston t shirt, Matt Groening, The Butthole Suffers, Sonic Youth, noted Minutemen/FIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt, David Bowie, Tom Waits, Beck, The Flaming Lips, and an ever-growing international cult audience.

Jeff Feuerzeig is an independent filmmaker and commercial director formerly based in New York, now living in Los Angeles. Jeff has completed production of his second feature length film, The Devil and Daniel Johnston, about legendary cult musician and artist Daniel Johnston. The Devil and Daniel Johnston was invited to premiere in Competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2005. This theatrical feature, shot on film, took four years to complete.

His first feature length film Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King (1994) received a national art-house theatrical release after opening at New York City's Film Forum. The Chicago Tribune called it "The funniest rock n' roll movie since 'This Is Spinal Tap." Since the DVD release of Half Japanese by Vanguard Releasing, the film has taken on a true cult status, being hailed as #1 by CMJ New Music Monthly in their list of the 15 Best Music Films.

Jeff's independent Jazz documentary Jon Hendricks: The Freddie Sessions (1990) premiered nationally on PBS and was hailed by the L.A. Times as a "rare blend of good music, good humor, and all around good vibes." The film featured Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau and George Benson.

Jeff began his career as a film editor working out of Red Car, New York, and to this day still edits his own work as well as creating music and sound design.

Jeff currently directs commercials out of Mirror Films in Los Angeles. Recent work includes humorous documentary and narrative comedy spots for Wal Mart, Budweiser, Careerbuilder.com, IBM, Cache Valley Cheese, Ford and The US Mint.

In the music world, Jeff wrote songs and played guitar in his own band Kickstand, and has produced songs for the Homestead, Teen Beat, Alias, and Virgin record labels, as well as CD tracks for Kicking Giant, Codeine, Flying Saucer, The Mad Scene, Lys Guillorn and The Bartlebees. His production technique can be sampled on the Joy Division tribute A Means To An End as well as We're All Normal And We Want Our Freedom
