While all poetry can be considered to be a protest against silence, poems of explicit protest draw attention–or witness–to specific political causes of interest to both poet and listener. The various intents and formats characterizing meaningful protest poems are the focus of the next Poetry & Psychoanalysis program, a program we hope will include significant audience participation. Participants are invited to bring a favorite protest poem to share aloud; and, each person is invited to briefly describe why the selected poem is personally meaningful. The event organizers will facilitate a larger discussion about the elements common to a variety of protest poems, and to poetry more generally as a protest against silence and isolation.
There is no charge for the event, but registration is appreciated.
Light refreshments served.
Selected anthologies of protest poems will be available for review.
